Loud and proud – new signage for Newham

When you visit Newham Industrial estate, you might check out the signs to find the business you’re looking for, or out of curiosity to see what else you might find here.
You should pack your sunnies, as this practical signage has enjoyed a much-needed refresh. Gone are the signs faded by the elements, and those bearing mottoes reminiscent of the pandemic - “Stay safe!” - which although only five years ago seems a lifetime away in emotional terms. In their place is a cohesive image that is bolder and brighter than ever before.
“Good signage makes Newham look professional and tidy,” said Newham BID manager Sian Knights. “It’s the same reason we keep our entrance mowed and go litter-picking. We want Newham to look welcoming; we want business owners to enjoy being located here, and we want their customers to come because they find it pleasant.
“It’s also about place-making. We are very proud of our identity as an industrial estate. Going for something that’s themed, branded and colour-coordinated, rather than being bombarded with lots of different styles and fonts, means that the signage looks uniform.”
It would appear business owners agree. “They can’t wait for the signs to go up,” said Sian. “It means a lot to them to have their name on one, telling people where businesses are located. People do read them, and might discover something they didn’t know they needed as a result.”
Newham is broken up into different areas, including Newham and Harvey Roads, Lighterage and Gas Hills, Port of Truro. Heron Industrial Estate - home to VS Golf, Toy Barn Automotive and physiotherapist Oliver Hughes - is new and growing quickly, hence the need for its own signage. Higher Newham Lane, meanwhile, has had an influx of new residents, who will want their own slot on the board.
“It’s the gold standard,” adds Sian. “Wouldn't it be great if all industrial parks looked like this? We already have a great location with the riverside and greenery, and smart signage is the icing on the cake.
